How to install a Minecraft modpack on a server
Modpacks bundle dozens or hundreds of mods that are tested to work together, such as Cobblemon, Create and Pixelmon packs. Here's how to run one on a server and play it with friends.
1. Pick a modpack
Most modpacks come from Modrinth or CurseForge. Check two things before you choose: the Minecraft version and the mod loader (Fabric, Forge or NeoForge). Every player needs the same pack version.
2. Get enough RAM
Small or "lightweight" packs run well on 4 to 6 GB. Big "kitchen sink" packs with 200+ mods need 8 to 12 GB. Not enough RAM is the most common reason a modpack server crashes or lags. See the RAM guide.
3. Install the pack on the server
Doing this by hand means installing the right loader, downloading every mod and removing the client-only ones (like minimaps and shaders) that crash servers.
On VantaHost it's one step: choose Install a modpack at checkout, or go to Manage server → Modpacks on an existing server, search for the pack and click Install. We install the correct loader and Java version, download every server-side mod and remove client-only mods automatically.
4. Install the same pack on your game
Each player installs the same modpack version with a launcher that supports modpacks, such as the Modrinth App, Prism Launcher or the CurseForge App. Then launch the pack and join the server's address under Multiplayer.
5. Common problems
- "Mod rejections" or "missing mods" when joining: the player's pack version doesn't match the server's.
- Server crashes on start: often a client-only mod, or not enough RAM.
- Lag: pre-generate the world, lower the view distance, or move to a bigger plan.
